Grateful Dead sound out of place in 2008, but they own a sonic territory which has to be understood in the context of music of the 70's. Just using guitar, bass, drums and keyboards they didn't use original sounds or song arrangements, but put soul into the music the old fasioned way - artistry. And the fans are devoted to the musicians more than the music.

I don't play GD a lot and maybe I should more often, but you have to respect the phenomenon. Its such a new concept these days to listen to a band overall, and not just the song playing right now.

The Hawkwind VST idea - well, I kind of think part of the effect of the VSC-3 or EMS Synthi was the stoned musician with the "whoa, what does THIS knob do?' look on his face. Yes, Hawkwind, I'm looking at you...

Tiny bit of Hawkwind in "What the Future Sounded Like" which if you haven't seen:-

Now that's a damn good idea:

A VST that induces a buzz to get you to the mental state of Hawkwind while playing it. Can anyone here code well with SynthEdit?

;)

Very sad to hear that Tristram Cary died last week (23 Aug 2008 )
Bloody hell Tristram, somebody knows more than you mate! Time to do that bungee jump, heroin shot, trip to Bangkok, etc if you've been putting it off!

What's everybody's fave synth for wooshy vacuum cleaner sounds? I rate Albino very highly. Is a Virus any good? I couldn't figure it out on my old Virus C.

Oops, I fucked up. The YouTube link is only the intro, I didn't bother to play it long enough to realise. I've put up the relevant Hawkwind section up:-

Warning: Brief images of Stacia. Not suitable for young children and small animals.

Matt, is the first Hawkwind sound the whoosy thing to which you are referring?

There's another one, more swooshy-synthy-"I'm starting to get bald, but hey"-enoish track.
