Aye, nothing like being sat in the green grass of the Oak beergarden on a hot Summers day!

anything goes....

Back on the layered sounds topic, I've just been having a mess about and found it's great for lush pads, it does make them richer and not louder. You have to balance the patches pretty finely using the patch volume and filters to create a hybrid sound. I think I'll be doing a bit more of this from now on. :)

yeh, pads are the main thing i do layered sounds for.....but as balnk said too...its great for stabbing sounds too....recently i layered a few sounds off the VC, one 303 style bass, layered with a short sharp stabbing bass....i ran these both from an appegiator (of my controller synth)...they sounded lifeless appart/seperately, but when i layered them....oh yeh!

I'll have to try some stabs. I think when you're layering sounds, each patch has to have similar characteristics in the first place so they embed well.

layering with other synths

Another thing I think can work very well with the Virus is layering it with another synth, especially one with a differing synthesis method.

For example, I get some fantastic and lush stringpads from layering my Virus b with a Roland JD-990...somehow, each complements the other such that the end result is greater than the sum of the parts in a way that simply layering two Virus patches does not.

cheers,
aeon

Indeed! Just for example a modwheel to filter balance and LFO's control the filters + some more stuff in mod matrix.

I have a Yamaha cs1x in a box somewhere, its not a very expensive synth but you could get some nice sounds out of it. It relied on layered sounds for it, Each 'single' patch would consist of 1-4 layered patches. I'd love to hear some sounds like this for the virus (maybe I should make some?). It was particularly good for pads that changed over time or had weird things going on in the background.. and efx.
