hvyen, I think he mean all type of automation :) LFO, envelope and automate some parameters in sequencer. Also can be useful to bind some parameter (like cutoff) to velocity.

Hey Psy Friends...
Hi.. Coax..are u syntaxis ?? :) Genetix - that sound, i tried to make it yesterday...i'm close..but still far.. Try using 1 or 2 saw tooth oscillators...sync the oscillators , turn up phase int use one high pass filter and one band pass filter at 50 and 60 % respectively... experiment with 1HP filter and one Bp filter or try both Bp and Both Hp..turn up resonance 1/4 way on both filters Add some saturation and go over to the distortion fx and try using sawtooth fold. turn up distortion mix to full..and intensity to 30 or 32 %...turn up high frequency/ trebble boost to full..also go to the EQ section and boost at 2 Khz and 3 or 4 Khz....cut the low end/bass completely from around 350 Hz or all the way...458 Hz also go to Unison and make it 6 or 8.. then turn on the Arp to play a lead... this is somewhat like the lead from the track..but still not like it... that lead sound is using some really awesome filter configuration on it..or some really great filters....the sound is crisp and hard.......i am not able to get that sort of sound....but the filters are definitely HP or BP to get that sort of tone... experiment..see what u can come up with...i'll keep trying too... hvyen - I'll make a short youtube video about automating parameters on the virus...so u get a better idea...soon.. bye :) |

Afternoon, psychedelic virus teacher  Thank you for the info on the XI sound, I'll have a go at that tonight and keep you posted. The one thing I like about XI is there productions are always crisp and clever, nothing really complicated but nice to listen to. |

XI sound
Here's my first attempt....it comes through quite harsh when you listen to the sample
definately not there yet, could do with some movement as well. http://rghost.net/2082412 |
Hey guys...
ok...so last night i went out after a long time....talamasca was playing here in bombay...so i went for it....it was pretty crazy...but it was at a night club...so u have the usual people that dont get it....when u'r dancing your head off....they look at you like u'r strange...so although i had to deal with a lot of funny stares and strange looks and sometimes , even the odd laugh or two... i just kept going at it....for me, i've played talamasca tracks at some of my best trips over the last ten years.most of which , have been alone, while listening to music, in my room..., seeing him yesterday for the first time last night,i felt somewhat grateful to him for all the times , i've been listening to some of his tracks while being really really happy...listening to some of his new tracks was quite exciting....cause his style has totally changed...sometimes , even a bit towards the more electro like styles.like I'm finding these days, with a lot of the older artists that are now currently making tracks...listen to Sesto Sento for example..a diffrent , smoother sort of sound...but in a way, a bit Pop like...clubby..even maybe inspired by electro house....some parts were fun...very groovy sort of basslines.....great big FATTTT kick and bigggg leads...some rubbish vocoder parts and singing...i dont like that too much....there were some cool acid leads during his session last night...that was fun.....its like these guys these days...focus on just one major lead and bassline and percussion section and some accompanying sounds and groove formers.......like little notes or small motives pl accompanying with a different synth, forming a groove.....but they really fatten up all these individual elements....its crazy how they get those sounds...what are they doing that we are not able to figure out ??? hmmmmm..... anyway...i thought i'd come here are share a tip with you that i just discovered, maybe u already do this...maybe you dont....anyway...using the virus, has now got me in a habit or sampling sounds and leads...so i guess i thought of doing this as well....ok....do u guys know how to make that sound, "the Psy Squelch"..well if you dont use that yet..there are lots of tutorials on it ...youtube etc..its just a saw with pitch modulation and also modulating the filter...very easy to make and quite basic .then there are many ways to make that basic psy squelch into different varieties and more exciting versions....by like using effects on it, phasers and flangers, or maybe even distortion or comb fliters, vowel filters etc...Anywayyy....so the tip i wanted to share was....i usually used VsT's as instances of the plugin or plugins with multiple outs....so basically midi would be triggering the softsynths continuously through out the track..i never had to sample anything, for many years..but with the virus snow and 4 outs... i think 3 USB outs is what i get...so I had to start sampling...and also cause with the virus, i cant export tracks directly...like...non real time...offline, I think its called... so even while just playing around with some sounds....maybe in sync with the tracks tempo, or just freely playing around with sounds on your synth....just experimenting and making sounds....for example, maybe when u are not in the mood to make a whole track, but just wanna play around on your synths to make some sounds...try recording everything you do..into a sampler, or just any way that you can record stuff in your sequencer program..then save it as an audio file.. after that go into an audio editor, and start using your imagination....chop up different bits...maybe just some beeps and grunts.. or sounds with various oscillators and wave tables...ambient sort of sounds too or maybe an arpeggiated pattern which is in time with the project tempo...anything...what ever....just record it and then chop it up later on into smaller samples and bits, which can be used in great ways...some straight forward..and some quite psychedellic...out of tempo, or double timed samples- by time stretching to double its speed and keep the pitch the same...or change the pitch too of the sample...or use a pitch envelope on the sampled audio, through your sampler....basicly what i'm saying is to play around with audio too....apart from just midi...sample stuff and then explore the possibilities of audio too...processing stuff like , reversing, time stretching, pitch shifting, it opens up some more creative possibilities after you are done creating great stuff with your synth in the midi world...get out of the midi realm then and start getting in to the audio realm after that....you come across some different and new outcomes to the way your tracks turnout ... I just made some nice psy squelches on Synth 1 ...recored by just letting record run on the sampler in fruity loops, called edison. while playing the psy squelch with one key on the keyboard ..just one note...or many...whatever..and each time playing that squelch , make some small variations to different parametrs on the synth, changes like modulation settings, like amount knob on the LFO's..filter cutoff..anything basically...just make sounds..think of each little morphed squelch or little sample as one single sound, which you can beef up in different ways later, after chopping individual samples out of your sampling/recording ...reverb, EQ, distortion..and maybe even back into the virus....while using the virus as an effect unit... etc ...use that sample in a number of ways.. . you could use the sampled sounds at some point in the track , maybe as a really cool ear catching , juicy, psycheledic sound...the ones in the background, that make that really psychedelic thing going on....like in some of the more trippy tracks....more like darkpsy...the sounds that create pictures in your mind..... or play them in a certain rhythm but arranging the audio samples in patterns...stuff like that...lots of stuff to experiment with after you sample stuff..also....save all the little and longer sounds in an organized library of samples...squelches, whooshes, riffs etc...so that you can use it all in other tracks too with slight variations...this somewhat gives all your tracks that signature quality to it...with familiar sounds in all your tracks..but with variations in each...BY archiving your stuff like this (all in WAV format preferably ) you could also play a live set, or make tracks in a more improvised, live sort of way..maybe in Ableton...cause u got all your parts saved..and u just gotta toss it all in one by one, to come up with spontaneous compositions..... .i'm just discovering all these ideas..thanks to the Virus and sampling it.... Anyway...i think this is getting to be quite a long and disconnected post..lots of scattered ideas... So if you guys have any ideas or stuff that you discovered during your music making sessions, then maybe you could just describe it , for all the other psy heads here...that might help everybody with new ideas for experimentation... see ya.. :) PS : DOwnload the file ..its a small example of what i'm was talking about...small variations to the sound...changing amounts of certain parameters... http://www.megafileupload.com/en/fil...mples-wav.html sorry.I think its a real slow download, cause i didnt really know any good free file upload sites... |
That took some reading :D
I used to really like Talamasca in the early days, when 3D vision records + Tip were in their prime (for me anyway) and alot of good tracks were being produced by GMS, 1200 mics etc. but they all seem to lose it a bit for me. I've always played out and loved full on psy trance, so when any of the artists i like lose touch of that I stop buying there stuff because i'm always on the look out for things I can play in my sets. I will listen to anything and do buy alternative styles but it still has to sound good to me . I haven't seen Talamasca live since the Astral Pheonix parties back in 1998, would be cool to see him again. I've been messing about with the "psy squelch" sound recently but I haven't gone deep into it yet. I was thinking about chopping it up and may be adding some glitch effects to it. |
hey...any new ideas etc??

Hi..
Genetix..that sound u were asking about earlier... well...i was wondering how they got that hard, almost woody sound out of their synth... I just came across that sort of sound just now... It happens when i use a multiband compressor on a saw bass...keep the channel/input volume low and push up the make up gain....play around with the other settings......also work only with a low and high band...bypass the mid band compression... try it out... along with the filters and resonance and maybe some distortion it sounds great...its not exactly that sound you want..but it has that similar tonal quality to it...... |
