they call it GAS brett (gear acquisition syndrome)

...and i am about to burst.

about the pulsar card - i would honestly consider selling it and getting a soundcard with sufficient ins - external soundcards are getting so damn cheap! besides im a bit of a nazi on signal path - less is best.

ebay it up and see whats around with at least 6 ins....

everyones good down this way - tim goes on tour this week - drew is off to israel soon - im stuck here dribbling shit to you over a forum whilst i wait for my damn keyboard

cheers

pete

hmmm dint know man, just getting to finally know my pulsar and I like it... next to 0 latency, 24/96 recording, like all the easy routing available and slowly getting to like the synths ( when I take ny hands off the virus that is) so yeah i dont really wanna get rid of it. i reckon i piss off my behringer mixer and get a decent a/d converter and i will be happy.

gas indeed...

Blay, just a wild estimate, how many effects would you hazarad a guess at which could run in realtime (well, let's say 5ms latency, or preferably less [2ms])? I know it's highly subjective, as the load on the CPU varies wildly depending on the complexity of each of the plugins used (with reverbs etc. being very intensive), but say I had a 1.9GHz Pentium-M (Centrino) or a 2.5GHz Pentium4, how many different "channels" of chained-effects could you expect to run, using general plugins such as EQ, compression and/or mult-band compression, distortion effects, tube/valve/tape emulation, chorus, reverbs and delays, etc..?

Currently I have an old 700MHz athlon running Win98se, and have no soundcard with ASIO etc., but that's all about to change soon (I've got my eye on a 1.9GHz Centrino2 laptop, and an Emu 1616M cardbus soundcard with Behringer ADA8000 AD convertor to get the extra eight analogue ins/outs from the ADAT connection), but in the meantime I've absolutely no idea how many plugins I can expect to run in realtime for processing lots of incoming and outgoing audio at the same time.....

I understand it's a "how long is a piece of string" question, but let's take the most extreme example possible... How many Waves' reverbs would you reckon could be run in realtime, using a preset such as Concert Hall, or something, for processing incoming audio channels (up to 16 mono channels - the reason being that I have 16 direct outs and 8 busses on my hardware mixer)?

Thanks!

exactly!
take that length of string, divide it by the number of keys on your controller keyboard and multiply it by the cigarette butts in your ashtray, and woila! ;)

but seriously timo - id hate to even try and guess and then have you disappointed with the actual result.
too many factors to consider - ram/mobo/harddrive/fsb/ just to name a couple...

but i can tell you that my girlfriend used to own a celeron 800/512m pc133/40gig 7200 hd/cheap gigabyte mobo - and generally i could push it out to about 20 to 24 simultaneous stereo tracks, running realtime fx on say half of those tracks, and a waves c4 compressor running realtime over the entire mix. just an example for you to estimate from - im not even going to try and guess what performance your system will give you.
(btw my girlfriends celeron was a piece of shit - really unstable).

cheers
