Set Virus to Vocoder mode and set every knob in the filter section to middle position. Then start tweaking. Not that hard.

I know a few ways to get quite nice vocada sounds.

Buy a Nova, MS2000 or use a stand alone vocoda. Then run that thru the Virus inputs for the filters and FX.

When u go into the vocoder mode it automatically defaults to middle values, doesnt it? Well thats what I thought anyways.

Ill make a note of what I do then I'll post it here......maybe a few others fall into the trap aswell. Vocoding is one the things I'd like to master on the Virus.

BTW JUho, its not as simple as you making out heheheheh 8)

ring mod 127
chorus mix 100, depth 50
del minimal taste.
if you want use fm for different flavor. unison twin and detune if you like.
it is a basic vocodor patch.
now play chords like Emin EGB, Bmin Df#B

Ehehee. But really, if my memory serves me well, you can hear the vocoder right away when you switch it on. Then just start tweaking and try out how different parameters affect the sound. But if you can't hear it right away, just set every filter section knob to center position.

Even the manual says that vocoder is really complex and hard thing, so now people seem to think that using a vocoder is rocket science.

osc 1 tri, osc 1 semitone 12, osc 2 sine and semi 12
osc 3 slave if you want it.
ring mod 127

I'd use rich harmonic waves instead of sines and triangles (well, there is that ring mod, but you get much better results with saws). Saw and square works best. If you use triangles and sines the outcome is unclear and muddy.

Yes, we could use saws and variable pulse and get interesting results. Fast lfo to modulate the PW 1+2.

Naturally a preamp is needed.

Those setting are on a voc patch that i made.
May be increase the input boost to 127, input gain to on.
Input parameters can be found in the effect section after voc.

OK great...thx for the help. I got my vocoder working now.....hehe its cool. I can play chords with my voice....thats really neat!

Made some good robot voices today.

One question though - How much clarity can u guys get with the vocoder......b'cos its genuinely difficult to decipher what is being said. Im not too bothered though.....im thinking of using the vocoder for weird voice effects....not so much for singing.

It's not very clear. You can clear it up by tweaking the spectral balance up a bit and avoiding low notes.

Edit: Also try out to add some white noise to help out the s phonetics to stand out.
