View Full Version : re-create famous sounds

Hi,
I sometimes enjoy re-creating sounds from popular tracks and play them to learn working in the sequencer and things like that...
So, which sounds did you creat with your equipment and how did you do it ?
I did e.g.:
Lange - Drifting Away (the main sequence sound)/Virus kb
Ferry Corsten/Fridge/Transa-Sound /JP-8080
CJ Stone /JP-8080/Virus kb
Blank&Jones/Svenson&Gielen-Sounds /Virus kb
Above&Beyond /JP-8080
Kai Tracid-like Leads /JP-8080/Virus kb
Of course the sounds are used by other producers, too - and there are more sounds from famous trance-tracks, i just gave you "my best" things I made (some are better, some not, some are very similar to the originals)...
so i hope you know what i mean and tell your sounds you made from popular songs :-)

I would if I knew how too. Can you guys give me some tips on how to learn to program your own sounds. How did you all learn? I'd love to be able to say, right I want a sound that starts like this, does this and then ends like that, I don't have a clue though. Help!

So, which sounds did you creat with your equipment and how did you do it ?
I rarely reproduce complete new sounds on my own. In most cases I use a preset and modify it, till the preset sounds the way I want.
Time is money... ;-)

Why don't you export the patch to a MIDI file and upload then were taking a few K then. Or send it to me and I'll stick it on my web space.

Hey Tea-mo,
Good topic. Just today I recreated that really cool sound(the one that weaves in and out) from Sasha's "Xpander" song. I made it with my Virus A. With some tweeking, it sounds awsome! If you want; I'll e-mail you the parameters. Just let me know.

I?ll pm you.

This is the first time I have synths that are programmable. When I just had canned sounds to work with I always loved re-creating entire songs. It's a great way to learn a piece of equipment. Now I'm at the point where I'm starting to learn synth programming and I can't wait to start re-creating famous sounds as well as work on my own sounds. That's why I was so excited when I discovered this forum. Sound design is fascinating!

Here's a challenge... Try to recreate the first 34 seconds of Rammstein's self-titled song (track 11 from first CD) -- with the panning helicopter effects and all. Good luck!

Well, thank you. I?m glad you like it.
This sound is the JP-8080 and I did the sequence myself (not downloaded a midifile from the net or so...) with Logic 5.
Now I give you a thing I made with my Virus kb. The Filter Envelope amount is a little bit too high, but I?m too lazy to record this new

Why do you wan?t to re-create famous sounds :?: :?: :?: .
I want to re-creat these sounds just for fun and for my interest of making phat sounds. That?s it.
Make your own sounds and make them famous.
I DO make my own sounds. I never said that I want to make copies of the famous producer-styles.
I wrote: "I sometimes enjoy re-creating sounds from popular tracks and play them to learn working in the sequencer and things like that..."
So this are my answers to this.

Tea-mo : Actually, your "Out of the Blue" sounds so good that I' now VERY interrested in getting a jp-8080. However, I already ordered a Virus KC so I wonder if I'll actually need a jp....The supersaw on the 8080 sounds just so great. Do you have other sound samples ? You have any tutorial for the jp-8080 ? I want to understand a bit more that synth :D
Sorry for all those questions, I just want to get the right setup ;)

so first thanx again for liking my out of the blue-programming..
I will write only a few words now cause I?m tired and I will go to bed now :-)
So I think the JP-8080 is not the most flexible synth, but it has that sound that is very special.. Just like this Super-Saw waveform...
Don?t buy this Synth just to have this one waveform !!
Buy it for having all the functions and overall sounds.
The Virus is more than 300% "better" than the JP-8080, but anyway you can?t recreat a JP-8080 with a virus !!! It sounds different !!
The JP-8080 doesn?t sound analog, even it?s a VA. It realloy sounds quite digital...you nearly can hear all those 0 and 1 numbers
You can definately make more cool sounds with the JP-8080 than this "ferry corsten-supersaw" !!
So you should go to your nearest music-store and play on it a bit...(when they still have the JP-8080 !! )
Every Synth has pros & cons...the virus has pros & cons the JP-8080 has pros & some more cons,...
BUT: tell me a trance/techno producer who doesn?t have a JP-8000 or/and a JP-8080 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
The JP-8080 is a nice Synthesizer for every kind of music (except Heavy metal)

Thanks a lot for the info! :)
However, is there a LOT of differences between the JP-8000 and the JP-8080 ? I don't really care that the JP-8000 only has 8 notes polyphony because the Virus C will be my main synth. However, JP-8000 VS JP-8080, do both units have the same effects?
Thanks again!
Tea-mo
18.10.2002, 06:07 AM
The JP-8080 is a little bit better.
It has distortion, a vocoder, a noise-Wave in oscillator 2 and I?m not sure if the Unison function is in the JP-8000 (?) - I think NO.
So, the difference is not big, but the JP-8080 is better.
Here is another sequence from the JP-8080 Ferry-Sound (Which is no preset):
Gouryella - Tenshi (Transa Remix) (http://www.geocities.com/siffhans/TenshiTransaByTea-mo.mp3)

Holy shit. This one is totally incredible. You are very talented ;)
Do you use much polyphony to get such a good sound ? Coz the Jp-8000 only got 8...And it does have the unison.
Do you think that you could exactly reproduce that exact sequence with the Jp-8000 ? If you could, then I'll go for the jp-8000 since it's very cheap used.
Thanks again,
really appreciate it!
Tea-mo
18.10.2002, 03:48 PM
Thanx again !!!
I?m glad that you all reply so positive reactions !!
So, I now read that the Unison-mode is in the JP-8080 only.
But now your questions:
I don?t use much polyphony for that kind of sequences cause the notes are all divided (step by step) - so they could even be played in mono-mode !
When I play it real poly, I have a real phat thing where I don?t need more polyphony ! The Sound has 3 Oscillators.
I can press 5 keys and the polyphony dies when pressing the 6th key. Sounds not much..but for this sound it?s phat enough !
YES, this sound can be made with the JP-8000, too.
But when you buy a JP-8000, think about the missing distortion-effect with that you can salt the sound much. FOR EXAMPLE ou can do an ABOVE & BEYOND Sound with the JP-8080 - and NOT with a JP-8000 !!
When you have an FX-Unit, you can add distortion with it..but I don?t know if you can make the exactly same kind of distortion of the JP...So you must know what you prefer !!
Tastes are different.
Bye
Tea-mo
And btw: you can get a used JP-8080 very cheap, too.

Tea-mo : Ok I'll do so next time :) And finally I ordered a jp-8080...I got a pretty cheap deal on ebay for a new one so I'm pretty sure that with a fr777, virus kc and a jp8080 I should have fun for quite a few months :D
Anyway I think that there was no need for a jp-8000 since I already have a keyboard on my virus kc...
Thanks!

There is no Software JP.

the first one is suppose to be from Rank 1 - Sensation Anthem 2003, but there are many bad notes as you guys said;) They say that the melody/ies from it is from Bach or someone known componist.
And yes, I should be working on my own songs, but I always end up remaking other songs, don't know why, I haven't produced my own work for about 5 months mabe now. Starting to get little worried hehe. Eventually I will come up with something, and I'm looking forward to hear some feedbacks from you guys at the virus forum;)

yes..or is there another synth that has this supersaw ?
Virus, Waldorf Q's, Supernovas, Nord Modular, Nordlead.
There's few. You can detune saws with other synths you know. H?h?h?.
Edit: Well of course you trance people might not have known that but it's true. May seem unbelieveable at first glance.
Edit 2: One additional h?h?h?h

Of course. I don't want to pay 800,- for a oscillator that sounds detuned saw. 800,- for detuned saw is quite much. Maybe trance people are just plain lazy to detune their saws. Or maybe they don't even know they can detune the saws on other synths. I wouldn't be suprised if that would be true. Well it's their loss.
But oh boy I wish I'd have bought ten used JP8080's a few years back! I could now sell them with profits to all those wannabe trance starts. Hah! Poor maggots!

I've tried to recreate a few sounds over the past 6 months. A few demo's are below.
The first thing I did when I got my Virus C.
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/communication_effort.mp3
An attempt at the PPK sound.
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/ppk_patch.mp3
A quick effort of the Push sound.
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/push_effort.mp3
An effort at creating the lead from a Mesh remix
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/mesh_patch.mp3
My own effort at the drifting away patch
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/lange_patch.mp3
An effort at Veracocha - Carte Blanche
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/veracocha_effort.mp3
My favourite. The strings from Hiver & Hammer - 5 Million Miles
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/hiver_hammer_patch.mp3
I've done 2 more, but I can't be bothered to find them. The 4 Strings lead sound, and the lead sound from Midway - Monkey Forest.
Kind Regards,
Rick

I used a Virus C on for all patches. The version of the lange demo I uploaded had a shed load of reverb. Not sure where that came from. I've re-uploaded the true version of what it should sound like.
www.neostudios.co.uk/virus/lange_patch.mp3
I've also found the Monkey Forest effort I tried a while ago

I'm willing to trade some of those patches if anyone has anything decent. I'm looking for a cool bassline and some effects. I like the style of the above and beyond bass if anyone has had a shot at that.
Kind Regards,
Rick
very nice sounds there! like em alot.
Dont think i have anything to trade with you though..

yes but detuning alot of saws doesnt reproduce that supersaw sound accurately as it was on the jp8000. nowhere near it actually. i cant explain it. you can make supersaws the hard way in pretty much any synth. my virus b supersaws sound nothing like those on the JP. niether do my vanguard multi detuned saw patches. theres just something about the original which you just cannot recreate perfectly without a JP. spend enough time listening to the supersaw sound and you'll start to pick out the nuances and the tiny details which make it sound so rich. likewise i listened to hollowcell's alpha juno hoover demo and by god that synth has some bottom end on it. that hoover rips like nothing i can recreate on any synth ive got. sure i can make hoovers on the virus, in vanguard, in hydra, in pretty much anything really. but it never quite has that oomph that the juno does when it punches em out.
also, alot of the people on the tranceaddict forums (as well as others) are well aware that you can detune saws in other synths. in fact, ive seen many (amateur and professional alike) attempt to recreate that supersaw sound in a bucket load of synths, including maelstrom and pro 53. usually by creating a stack of 6 to 9 instances with varying amounts of detune on each saw.
never ever sounds as pure as the real thing. NEVER.

yeah jp8080 really has a sound of his own :)
http://www.madstation.net/breakdkwn11.mp3 (main synth in there is jp8080...I love that synth :) first synth is vanguard)

yea i know what you mean. i just cant get *that* sound from my virus. or software. i can definitely see why tranceheads cant get enough of that sound. theres something about it which is just so very very very sweet. even if it is (over)used by practically every trance/hard dance artist under the sun.
fecking good demo btw madstation - backed up my point with a perfect example ;)
btw, i didnt read the post fully before clicking the link and i knew that lead was vanguard straight off :) vanguard has such a distinctive kind of sound - a bit hollow in places but its got a lot of grit and alot of crunch. makes very nice acid. hmmmmmm...acid...
